Today brings us the cheerful news that New Hall has been refounded with an endowment of £30 million and finally been given the proper name that it has been waiting for since 1954.

This led to a discussion on IRC about people who have colleges at both Cambridge and Oxford named after them. The list is:

God
  • Trinity College, Cambridge
  • Trinity Hall, Cambridge
  • God's House Christ's College, Cambridge
  • Trinity College, Oxford
Jesus
  • Christ's College, Cambridge
  • Corpus Christi College, Cambridge
  • Emmanuel College, Cambridge
  • Jesus College, Cambridge
  • Christ Church, Oxford
  • Corpus Christi College, Oxford
  • Jesus College, Oxford
the Virgin Mary modestly hides in the full names of several colleges
  • The College of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist, and the glorious virgin Saint Radegund, within the City and University of Cambridge, commonly called Jesus College, in the University of Cambridge
  • The King's College of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas in Cambridge
  • The College of Corpus Christi and the Blessed Virgin Mary in Cambridge
  • Hall of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge
  • The College of the Blessed Mary and All Saints, Lincoln (in Oxford)
  • The Warden and Scholars of St Mary's College of Winchester in Oxford, commonly called New College in Oxford
  • The Provost and Scholars of the House of the Blessed Mary the Virgin in Oxford, commonly called Oriel College, of the Foundation of Edward the Second of famous memory, sometime King of England
Mary Magdalene
  • Magdalene College, Cambridge
  • Magdalen College, Oxford
St Peter
  • Peterhouse, Cambridge
  • St Peter's College, Oxford
St Catherine
  • St Catharine's College, Cambridge
  • St Catherine's College, Oxford
Edmund Rich of Abingdon
  • St Edmund's College, Cambridge
  • St Edmund Hall, Oxford
Lady Margaret Beaufort
  • Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford
  • Margaret Beaufort Institute of Theology, Cambridge
Sir Isaac Wolfson
  • Wolfson College, Cambridge
  • Wolfson College, Oxford

Cambridge's Pembroke College is named after Marie de St Pol, Countess of Pembroke (widow of the 1st Earl of Pembroke); Oxford's Pembroke College is named after William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke.

Cambridge has two colleges named after St John the Evangelist, and Oxford has one named after St John the Baptist.

Cambridge has two colleges endowed by Lady Margaret Beaufort (Christ's and John's) whereas Oxford has a college named after her. Edited to add four and a half years later: Cambridge also has the Margaret Beaufort Institute for Theology, which is member of the theological federation so only loosely affiliated with the University and not much like a proper college, but still worth noting.

Cambridge's University College lasted 7 years before it was renamed Wolfson College. Oxford's University College is over 700 years old.

Both universities have benefited from money obtained from manufacturing cars: Cambridge via the Cripps foundation, and Oxford via the Nuffield foundation.

Wait a minute. Tony Robinson?! :-)

Fun though that would be, it doesn't seem to be.

Hah! You sound like you come from some strange universe where the Arian doctrine was declared a heresy in the fourth century, or something weird and kooky like that!

Ooh, thanks, that's pretty comprehensive. Unfortunately, Yes Minister seems to be beaten into a cocked hat.

Yes, I was thinking that. It said Isaac Wolfson was the only person other than Jesus and St John, didn't it? You can forgive it not having noticed one or two others, but missing some and erroneously including St John is particularly bad.

I said "Oh, Peter is the only one other than God etc" the other day, so I'm quite wrong too!

(Although I can't see how Catharine is the same person if her name isn't even spelt in the same way...)

I can't remember about St John, but you're probably right. You presumably count Jesus as God, but I feel some of them should have been a lot more obvious, but I don't really know the oxford colleges. OTOH, their way of phrasing it was a lot funnier :)

You spot it more in the names of minor prep and preprep schools, but to think of all those saints, mostly come to gruesome ends centuries ago, and all the stately neogothic piles they inspired! I wonder what St Collette or someone would have made when she was on the pyre, or wherever, if transported back through a wormhole, or something, she'd seen a little advert from Explorer, underneath an ad for fitted kitchens and an article on asparagus an advert for St Collette's Prepreparatory School. It would all seem might strange, I think. As strange as that world seems to us today. Or perhaps an anchorite walled up unbeknownst to the owners due to some unexpected pestilence at a crucial time, and actually ending up inside a school named after her.

How do we have two named after St John? I can't see what I'm missing... oh! Hidden in Jesus college?

Possibly of interest: Christ Church is actually the college's third name. It was originally called Cardinal College (after its founder, Cardinal Wolsey), and then King Henry VIII College (after... you work it out), before being finally renamed to Aedes Christi (whence Christ Church) when the cathedral was moved there in (?) 1532.

I remember [livejournal.com profile] r_e_mercia wrote a play a few years ago set in (she thought) the fictional St Mary's College, Oxford. She was rather surprised on the first night when I mentioned that not only was there a St Mary's College, the play was being performed in it!
