Oh god. I nearly puked when I got a reply from a Notes user just now. Between the top-posted reply and the text from my original message were my message's headers, formatted like this:

Yikes, that's even worse than the (long since retired) Notes installation at my company used to do. At least ours had one ASCII-art block instead of one per header.

Indeed, Notes is a big pile of stink.

You didn't do so bad either, you've managed to not get sections where it breaks the (censored) arbitarially to different linewidths. Which isn't so bad the first time, but then you reply a few times, and it needs to shorten all the lines again, so arbitary line-shortening routine raises its head again.

a Notes user
The correct term is 'victim'

Notes is notable for being yet another example that the Microsoft solution (to whatever problem) is rarely the worst. It's a really, really bad player in the open systems world. I assume that Notes emails, when kept within the groupware walled garden, are actually not as awful looking as they are when they escape, and that it's just an arrogant refusal to be nice to 'foreign' users. I can't image they look that bad to other Notes users.

I use notes at work...

Inside the walled garden, the headers aren't as bad, but top posting is rampant, and it includes all attachments, inline pictures and everything else when replying. So... it's still quite bad.

I *hated* dealing with email issues on a notes platform when I worked for a company that used it (with Domino/AS400) as the default mail platform. I have never looked back since I had the misfortune of being "downsized" from there and ended up in a Notes-free environment. I'd rather rivet my hand to a server than return to using and maintaining a notes platform.

I've just encountered it at work. So far it seems fine - except for when you click "discard" it gives you the the option to "send" exactly where I'd expect the "Confirm" button to be. One day I know its going to get me.

*prays that the Roulette Wheel of Groupware which is currently spinning does not land on Lotus Notes*

Its not so bad

My company uses Notes, the newest version and I don't find it bad at all. I come from a MS shop and have used Outlook forever. I wasn't looking forward to the switch but after I opened my mind a bit, I adjusted fairly quickly and actually like it a bit better than Outlook. I've seen some very cool applications also.
