Also the use of 253 is fundamentally broken in the extension model. The recipient SMTP doesn't know that the sender SMTP will support the relevant extension, and so cannot say "you shouldn't send DATA" with it. If you then reject the DATA command or the final dot, it will never know to send an MSID command. This makes this a stupid idea in the first place, because it then doesn't work until everyone has upgraded.

I (charitably) put that down to extremely bad drafting. The server knows it can say 253 because the client said EHLO DMTP.
