It uses electricity to wind the spring, to light the LEDs, and to power the controller. An article in Wired refers to the latter more explicitly than most other stuff. There was also an article in the Cambridge Evening News which refers to "the computer which runs safety checks" which is probably the same thing. He is being rather secretive and inconsistent about the computer.
