The key word is “journal”: when you have a dynamic zone, updates are persisted in the zone’s journal; by default this is named after the zone file with .jnl appended. When the journal grows too large, the zone file is rewritten with the accumulated changes.
The journal is also used for generating incremental zone transfers, and on secondaries for recording received IXFRs, and for signature updates in automatically signed zones.
